Following a phone call with Chinese President Xi Jinping, U.S. President Donald Trump hailed the conversation as “very productive,” announcing significant progress on a range of important issues. The discussions, which marked the second telephone exchange between the two leaders since Trump’s return to office, covered topics including trade, the sale of TikTok, and global security.
According to a statement from the White House, the leaders made progress on several fronts, including a potential deal for the popular social media app, TikTok. President Trump confirmed that under the prospective agreement, TikTok’s U.S. operations would be “owned by all American investors, and very rich people and companies.” This move would address long-standing national security concerns in the U.S. regarding the app’s parent company, ByteDance.
On the trade front, while no specific details were released, President Trump expressed optimism about the discussions. The call took place as a temporary tariff truce, which had seen both nations reduce levies, is set to expire in November. State media in Beijing reported that President Xi urged the U.S. to “avoid taking unilateral trade-restrictive measures” and called for an “open, fair, and non-discriminatory business environment for Chinese companies investing in the United States.”
In addition to economic matters, the two presidents also discussed shared global challenges. President Trump noted that they addressed the opioid crisis, specifically the trafficking of Fentanyl, and the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine. The conversation highlights a complex relationship where economic competition and geopolitical tensions coexist with the need for cooperation on critical global issues.
The leaders also confirmed plans for future meetings, with President Trump announcing he will meet with President Xi on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum summit in South Korea at the end of next month. Furthermore, President Trump stated he would travel to China next year, and President Xi would visit the United States at an unspecified time.
This series of high-level engagements suggests that despite recent trade disputes and geopolitical differences, both nations are committed to maintaining open lines of communication and working toward mutual interests.
