GANSU, China – August 8, 2025 – Chinese authorities are conducting an “all-out” rescue operation in Gansu province following a series of flash floods triggered by continuous heavy rainfall that began on August 7. The devastating floods have resulted in at least 10 confirmed deaths and have left 33 individuals missing.
In response to the tragedy, President Xi Jinping has issued a direct order for rescue teams to make the “utmost effort” to locate and save the missing individuals. He has also instructed all regional governments to remain vigilant and to enhance efforts in identifying potential risks, citing the recent frequent occurrences of extreme weather across the country.
The floods have caused significant damage, with photos from the Gansu government showing roads covered in heavy silt and large stones. Footage from Chinese fire authorities depicted rescue workers navigating through strong, grey floodwaters in a village as they assisted residents to safety.
This event is part of a broader pattern of severe weather in China, which has been experiencing record rainfall in both its northern and southern regions in recent weeks. Since late July, extreme weather has reportedly claimed the lives of at least 60 people across northern China. The government is continuing to mobilize resources to support the rescue efforts and to provide aid to those affected by the floods.
