Pakistan Unites Against Floods: Federal Government, Army, and International Partners Coordinate Comprehensive Response

Islamabad – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif today announced that the federal government is spearheading a comprehensive, nationwide strategy to address the devastating floods and build long-term resilience against climate change. This initiative includes a focus on constructing new water reservoirs and improving water management systems through full consultation and coordination with all provinces, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJ&K), and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB).

Speaking on the urgency of the situation, the Prime Minister stated that “climate change is a reality, and only through effective preparedness can the damages of natural disasters be minimised.” He underlined that the issue is a national concern, requiring a collective effort from all federating units to safeguard citizens from its adverse impacts. A policy working paper is currently being finalized for a timely response to monsoon impacts, which will be shared with all provincial governments to devise a joint course of action. Once the immediate emergency subsides, a high-level meeting will be convened with Chief Ministers, heads of relevant institutions, and the Prime Ministers of AJ&K and GB to formalize a unified strategy.

In a show of international solidarity, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also received a telephone call from Iranian President Dr. Masoud Pezeshkian, who extended heartfelt condolences and assured Pakistan of Iran’s full support and assistance. The gesture was acknowledged by the Prime Minister as a reflection of the deep fraternal ties between the two nations, and both leaders expressed their commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations.

Concurrently, Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir personally visited flood-affected areas of Punjab, including the Sialkot Sector, Shakargarh, Narowal, and Kartarpur. The COAS conducted an aerial survey of Darbar Sahib Kartarpur and assured the affected Sikh community that all damaged religious sites would be restored on a priority basis. He reiterated the state’s responsibility to protect minorities and their religious sites, and was warmly welcomed by the Sikh community, who expressed gratitude for the army’s services during the calamity.

The coordinated efforts of the government and the armed forces, along with international support, underscore a unified commitment to managing the ongoing crisis and ensuring the safety and well-being of all Pakistani citizens.
