RIYADH – September 23, 2025 – The Royal Saudi Court has announced with deep sorrow the passing of the Kingdom’s Grand Mufti, Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Abdullah Al Sheikh, at the age of 82. Sheikh Al Sheikh, a revered figure in the Islamic world, passed away after a life dedicated to serving Islam and the Muslim community.
In a show of national mourning, King Salman bin Abdulaziz has ordered that Salat al-Ghaib—funeral prayers in absentia—be performed for the late Grand Mufti. These prayers will be held today following the Asr prayer at the Grand Mosque in Mecca, the Prophet’s Mosque in Medina, and in mosques across the Kingdom. Funeral prayers will also be held at the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh.
The Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, Sheikh Abdulaziz Bin Abdullah Al al-Sheikh has passed away, the Royal Court says in a statement carried by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA).
Sheikh Abdulaziz passed away on Tuesday morning, the Royal Court said.

Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Abdullah Al Sheikh held numerous distinguished positions, including Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, Chairman of the Council of Senior Scholars, and Chairman of the General Presidency of Islamic Research and Ifta, a role he held with the rank of minister. He was the third individual to hold the esteemed title of Grand Mufti of the Kingdom, following in the footsteps of Sheikh Mohammed bin Ibrahim Al Shaikh and Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Baz.
Born on November 30, 1943, in Mecca, Sheikh Al Sheikh overcame significant personal challenges from a young age. He lost his father before the age of eight, grew up as an orphan, and lost his sight in his twenties. Despite these adversities, he demonstrated remarkable intellect and devotion, memorizing the Noble Quran early in his life. He pursued extensive studies in Sharia and became a respected member of academic councils at universities. His profound knowledge and eloquence were also showcased as a prominent preacher at the Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh and at Nimrah Mosque.
A prolific author, Sheikh Al Sheikh made significant contributions to Islamic jurisprudence and scholarship. His numerous publications include collections of fatwas, works on Islamic doctrine, and writings on lawful and prohibited matters. His scholarly work, including compilations of fatwas delivered during various programs and occasions, will serve as a lasting legacy for future generations of Islamic scholars and students.
The passing of Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Abdullah Al Sheikh is a profound loss for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the global Muslim community. His life of scholarship, piety, and service will be remembered and honored.
