The Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF), a coalition of pro-Palestinian activists and aid vessels, has reported a series of drone attacks and explosions targeting its boats currently positioned off the coast of Crete, Greece. The flotilla, which includes the vessel carrying Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, is on a mission to deliver humanitarian aid and break the illegal siege of Gaza.
According to a statement from GSF, the attacks involved “multiple drones, unidentified objects dropped, communications jammed and explosions heard from a number of boats.” The organization asserted that these actions were part of “psychological operations,” but vowed that the activists would not be intimidated. German human rights activist Yasemin Acar reported on Instagram that a total of five vessels had been targeted. In an earlier post, Acar stated that the group had sighted 15 to 16 drones and that their radios were being jammed by loud music.
Videos shared on the flotilla’s official social media pages showed explosions near the vessels. Brazilian activist Thiago Avila was heard describing the attacks in one video, noting that four boats had been “targeted with drones throwing devices” just before another explosion was heard in the background.
This is not the first time the flotilla has reported such incidents. Earlier this month, the GSF claimed to have been attacked by drones over two days while it was stationed in Tunisia. No injuries were reported in either incident. The flotilla, comprising 51 vessels, had set sail from Barcelona in late August.
In response to the flotilla’s mission, Israel issued a statement on Monday, reiterating that it would not permit the vessels to reach Gaza. Israel has previously intercepted two similar flotilla attempts in June and July.
The GSF remains committed to its mission of delivering aid to the people of Gaza and raising international awareness about the ongoing siege.
