Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif Departs for China to Attend SCO Summit

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has departed for Tianjin, China, to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit. The two-day summit, set to convene leaders from over 20 nations across Central Asia, the Middle East, South Asia, and Southeast Asia, is poised to be a powerful showcase of Global South solidarity.

Terming his visit “historic,” the Prime Minister stated on X that he looks forward to meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping and other world leaders. He expressed his goal to further deepen Pakistan’s “All Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership” with China and to enhance regional cooperation, multilateralism, and shared goals for peace and prosperity with other key countries.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Mofa), Prime Minister Sharif will hold bilateral meetings with President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Qiang to discuss the multifaceted dimensions of Pakistan-China cooperation. His itinerary also includes a significant honor: he will attend the Grand Military Parade in Beijing as the chief guest, a ceremony commemorating the 80th anniversary of the World’s Anti-Fascist War.

The Prime Minister is also scheduled to engage with prominent Chinese businessmen and corporate executives to discuss bilateral trade, economic, and investment ties, and will address a Pakistan-China B2B Investment Conference in Beijing. This engagement is a key component of the visit, which is expected to formally launch the second phase of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC-II). Following a delay of approximately five years, this new phase will prioritize industrial cooperation, with both sides expected to agree on tangible and measurable outcomes.

The visit, which follows recent decisions by both countries to form technical working groups focused on advanced agricultural technologies, reaffirms the importance both nations place on deepening their strategic partnership. It also manifests their joint commitment to support each other on issues of respective core interests, advance CPEC, and maintain regular communication on important regional and global developments.

The summit will also be notable for featuring a meeting between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping, marking Modi’s first visit to China in over seven years amid efforts to defuse tensions from border clashes in 2020.
