El-Fasher, Sudan – A devastating landslide has reportedly killed more than 1,000 people and obliterated the village of Tarasin in Sudan’s western Darfur region. The Sudan Liberation Movement/Army (SLM/A), a rebel group controlling the area, issued a statement detailing the tragedy and appealing for immediate international assistance to recover bodies and provide aid to the affected region.

Disaster Strikes a Secluded Community
The landslide, triggered by days of relentless heavy rainfall, occurred on Sunday in the remote Marra Mountains. According to the SLM/A, the village of Tarasin was “completely levelled to the ground,” leaving only one known survivor. The area is known for its difficult terrain, which is largely inaccessible by land transport, and has been a refuge for people fleeing the ongoing conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
The Sovereign Council in Khartoum has expressed its condolences, announcing that “all possible capabilities” have been mobilized to support the area. However, the remoteness of the region and the scale of the destruction pose significant challenges to rescue and recovery efforts. Sources on the ground suggest that without specialized international teams, the recovery of bodies may be a prolonged and difficult process.
Humanitarian Crisis Deepens Amid Conflict
The tragedy unfolds against the backdrop of Sudan’s third year of war, which has created one of the world’s worst humanitarian crises. The conflict has severely impacted the Darfur region, with famine already declared in some areas. The Marra Mountains, despite being a place of refuge, have been plagued by shortages of food and medication, further compounding the vulnerability of the local population.
The ongoing fighting, particularly in the strategic city of El-Fasher, has displaced millions and has made it increasingly difficult for aid agencies to reach those in need. The SLM/A, which is aligned with the Sudanese army against the RSF, has highlighted the dire situation of the villagers, many of whom are internally displaced persons from other parts of Darfur.

Appeal for International Support
The SLM/A has made an urgent plea to the United Nations and international aid agencies for assistance. The group has stressed the need for specialized teams to help with the recovery of victims, including children, and for humanitarian aid to be delivered to the region. The call for help underscores the immense challenges faced by the affected community and the critical need for an immediate, coordinated international response to this catastrophic event.
The landslide serves as a grim reminder of the dual threat faced by civilians in Sudan: the brutal conflict and the increasing natural disasters that are now claiming lives in the war-torn country. The international community’s response to this tragedy will be a test of its commitment to the people of Sudan, particularly in the most isolated and conflict-affected regions.
