Copenhagen — Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, currently presiding over the European Union, has issued a sharp rebuke of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, calling him “a problem in himself” amid the escalating humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Speaking to Jyllands-Posten, Frederiksen criticized Israel for constructing a new settlement in the occupied West Bank and admonished the government’s military strategy, warning that it had “gone too far.” Describing the situation in Gaza as “absolutely appalling and catastrophic,” she emphasized the urgency of international action.
Frederiksen signaled a willingness to explore a range of responses, including targeted political measures and sanctions—potentially against settlers, ministerial figures, or even the Israeli state—for example, on trade or joint research. She noted Denmark was developing sanctions modeled after those used against Russia, aiming to maximize impact where it matters most.
Meanwhile, Gaza’s civil defence agency reported 39 more deaths in Gaza City over the weekend, amid reports of relentless bombardment in the Zeitun neighborhood, where approximately 50,000 residents are estimated to be trapped with minimal access to food or water. The agency warned the region is experiencing mounting conditions described as “ethnic cleansing.” Since October 2023, Israeli military operations have resulted in at least 61,827 deaths and 155,275 injuries across Gaza.
Prime Minister Netanyahu’s government had earlier approved a plan to seize control over Gaza City—one of the most densely populated and devastated areas of the territory, which has endured over 22 months of bombardment.
