Lahore, August 23, 2025 — An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Lahore on Friday approved an eight-day physical remand of Shahrez Khan, nephew of PTI founder Imran Khan and son of Aleema Khan, in connection with the May 9 Jinnah House attack case.
The court, presided over by ATC Judge Manzar Ali Gul, announced the verdict after hearing arguments from both the prosecution and the defence. The police had requested a 30-day remand of the accused; however, the court approved an eight-day remand instead.
Court Proceedings
During the hearing, Advocate Salman Akram Raja, counsel for Shahrez Khan, argued that his client had been arrested two years after the May 9 incidents and that his mother, Aleema Khan, had already been discharged from the same case. He maintained that Shahrez had no role in political or party affairs and urged the court to dismiss the charges.
On the other hand, the police opposed the request for discharge, asserting that the accused was directly involved in the Jinnah House attack. DSP Asif Javed presented case records in court, detailing the suspect’s alleged role in the incident.
After reviewing arguments, the ATC reserved its verdict briefly before announcing that Shahrez would be remanded into police custody for eight days.
Background
Shahrez Khan was arrested late Wednesday night, with his detention formally confirmed by police on Friday. According to DIG Investigation Zeeshan Raza, Shahrez was wanted in connection with the May 9, 2023, riots, which followed the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan in a corruption case.
The Jinnah House attack remains one of the most high-profile incidents of the May 9 unrest, when rioters stormed and vandalized the Lahore Corps Commander’s residence. The violent protests also targeted military installations, including the General Headquarters (GHQ) in Rawalpindi, as well as public and private property, drawing widespread condemnation.
DIG Zeeshan emphasized that individuals involved in anti-state activities would face legal action without leniency, reaffirming the state’s commitment to accountability for the May 9 violence.
Shahrez Khan will remain in police custody during the eight-day physical remand, during which investigators will continue inquiries into his alleged role in the attack. He is expected to be produced before the court upon completion of the remand for further proceedings.
