Islamabad, Pakistan – August 1, 2025 – Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has issued a directive for the urgent and full operationalization of the Pakistan Meteorological Department’s (PMD) early warning system to effectively mitigate the devastating impacts of severe weather conditions. The announcement was made during a high-level meeting convened to address the ongoing flood situation and monsoon-related damages in Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) and Gilgit-Baltistan (GB).

During the meeting, the Prime Minister expressed profound grief over the loss of lives and widespread destruction caused by torrential rains across the country, particularly in AJK and GB. He affirmed the federal government’s unwavering solidarity with the people of the affected regions and announced his intention to visit Gilgit-Baltistan to show support. A federal relief package will also be provided to help compensate for the losses.

The Prime Minister stressed that preventing further human and financial losses must be the top priority in the ongoing relief and rescue operations. He also instructed all relevant federal institutions to work closely with local administrations to assess the full extent of the damages and ordered the immediate restoration and repair of communication networks and road infrastructure in the affected areas.

The Chairman of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) briefed the meeting on the current situation, reporting that the monsoon season has claimed 295 lives and injured over 700 people. More than 1,600 homes have been completely destroyed, and 376 livestock have perished. The NDMA Chairman also cautioned that monsoon activity is expected to intensify towards the end of August, and comprehensive preparations are underway to ensure effective preventive measures.
