ANKARA, TÜRKİYE – August 11, 2025 – A magnitude 6.1 earthquake struck Türkiye’s northwestern Balıkesir province on Sunday evening, leaving one person dead and at least 29 injured, according to official reports. The quake, which occurred at approximately 7:53 p.m. local time, was centered in the town of Sindirgi and was felt in major cities, including Istanbul.

Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed that search and rescue operations were swiftly initiated by the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD). Emergency teams rescued an 81-year-old woman from the rubble, but she tragically died shortly after. A total of 16 buildings, most of which were derelict, and two mosque minarets collapsed in the region.
Authorities have urged residents to avoid damaged structures due to a series of aftershocks, with the strongest measuring magnitude 4.6. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan extended his wishes for a speedy recovery to all affected citizens. The government is continuing to assess the full extent of the damage and coordinate relief efforts.
In a separate statement, the Prime Minister of Pakistan expressed profound grief and sorrow over the loss of life and injuries caused by the earthquake. The Prime Minister affirmed Pakistan’s solidarity with the people and government of Türkiye during this difficult time, offering any necessary support and assistance.
