Tragedy Strikes Off Yemen Coast as Migrant Boat Sinks, 76 Dead

Aug 4, 2025 | Global Affairs, Latest News

Sana’a, Yemen – August 4, 2025 – The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has reported a devastating incident off the coast of Yemen, where a boat carrying 157 migrants, primarily from Ethiopia, sank, leaving at least 76 people dead and dozens more missing. According to the IOM, 32 individuals were rescued from the tragedy. The vessel sank off the coast of Abyan governorate in southern Yemen. Despite being in the midst of a civil war, Yemen remains a critical and perilous transit hub for migrants, particularly those from Ethiopia, who undertake the dangerous “Eastern Route” across the Red Sea in the hopes of reaching wealthy Gulf states.

This tragedy underscores the immense dangers faced by migrants on this route. Last year alone, the IOM documented at least 558 deaths, with 462 resulting from similar boat accidents. Migrants who successfully arrive in Yemen often face further exploitation and risks, with tens of thousands becoming stranded in the conflict-ridden country.

This incident is a grim reminder of the urgent need for international action to address the humanitarian crisis and protect vulnerable migrants and refugees.
