Beijing terms Pakistan Army ‘Steadfast Guardian’ of Pak–China Friendship

Aug 25, 2025 | Global Affairs, Latest News

Islamabad, August 24, 2025 — The Chinese Foreign Ministry has lauded the leadership of Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, describing the Pakistan Army as a pillar of national stability and a steadfast guardian of the enduring China–Pakistan friendship, state broadcaster PTV World reported on Sunday.

The acknowledgment came following a high-level meeting between Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi and COAS Munir in Islamabad on August 21, during the senior diplomat’s three-day official visit to Pakistan.

China’s Endorsement of Pakistan Army’s Role

In its statement, the Chinese Foreign Ministry said Wang Yi praised the Pakistan Army for its vital role in advancing consensus reached by the leadership of both nations and in safeguarding Pakistan’s national stability. He stressed that fostering stronger China–Pakistan relations contributes to regional peace and stability, reaffirming Beijing’s unwavering support for Pakistan’s sovereignty, territorial integrity, and national security.

COAS Reaffirms “Ironclad” Ties

Responding to Wang Yi’s remarks, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir described China as “Pakistan’s ironclad friend”, noting that the two countries’ strategic partnership is “as solid as a rock.” He expressed deep appreciation for Beijing’s long-standing support for Pakistan’s economic, social, and security development, underscoring that the friendship enjoys broad consensus across all segments of Pakistani society.

The COAS reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to:

  • Enhancing counterterrorism cooperation with China,
  • Ensuring the security of Chinese nationals and projects in Pakistan, particularly those under the China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC),
  • Consolidating and advancing the all-weather strategic cooperative partnership.

High-Level Engagements in Islamabad

The meeting was held during Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s visit, undertaken at the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar. In addition to his meeting with COAS Munir, the Chinese foreign minister also held separate discussions with President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, covering the full spectrum of bilateral cooperation.

The two sides reiterated that the China–Pakistan partnership is not contingent on external factors. Addressing speculation surrounding evolving global alignments, both Wang Yi and Foreign Minister Dar dismissed any suggestion that strengthening ties between Pakistan and the United States or China and India could dilute the iron-brotherhood between Islamabad and Beijing.

Shared Commitment to Regional Peace

Both nations delivered a joint message that current geostrategic realignments will not affect the China–Pakistan all-weather strategic partnership. Instead, they reaffirmed their mutual determination to work together for regional stability, economic cooperation, and the security of shared interests.
