Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif is set to lead Pakistan’s delegation to the high-level segment of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session in New York, a meeting that will be highlighted by his participation in a meeting of select Muslim leaders with U.S. President Donald Trump. This upcoming interaction with the U.S. President marks the first direct meeting between the two leaders since President Trump assumed office in January.
The Foreign Office (FO) confirmed that the prime minister will participate in this meeting “to exchange views on issues pertaining to regional and international peace and security.” The gathering follows recent significant developments in the Middle East, including an Israeli attack in Qatar that targeted Hamas officials and subsequent calls by Arab and Muslim leaders for a review of ties with Israel. The FO also noted that this meeting follows the recent visit of Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal General Syed Asim Munir, who was hosted at the White House by President Trump in June.

Pakistan’s Agenda at the UNGA
At the UNGA session, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif will deliver a comprehensive address, urging the international community to take decisive action on several critical global issues. He will call for a resolution to “situations of prolonged occupation and denial of the right to self-determination,” with a particular focus on India-occupied Kashmir and Palestine. He will also bring attention to the “grave crisis in Gaza,” advocating for decisive action to end the suffering of the Palestinian people.
The Prime Minister’s address will also cover Pakistan’s perspective on the regional security situation and address other issues of international concern, including climate change, terrorism, Islamophobia, and sustainable development.
Pakistan’s Commitment to Multilateralism
The FO highlighted that the Prime Minister’s participation in this annual global gathering reaffirms Pakistan’s strong commitment to multilateralism and the United Nations. In his current role as a member of the UN Security Council, the Prime Minister will underscore Pakistan’s resolve to work with all UN member states to uphold the UN Charter, prevent conflict, foster peace, and promote global prosperity.
On the sidelines of the UNGA session, the Prime Minister is scheduled to attend several high-level events, including important meetings of the UN Security Council, a high-level Meeting of the Global Development Initiative (GDI), and a special high-level event on Climate Action. He will also conduct bilateral meetings with a number of world leaders and senior UN officials to discuss issues of mutual interest.
