Pakistan Successfully Launches Advanced Remote Sensing Satellite, Boosting Earth Observation Capabilities

Jul 31, 2025 | Latest News

Islamabad, Pakistan – July 31, 2025 – In a significant stride for its national space program, Pakistan today successfully launched an advanced remote sensing satellite from the Xichang Satellite Launch Center in China. This milestone, achieved in collaboration with China Electronics Technology Group Corporation (CETC) and MICROSAT China, marks a new chapter in Pakistan’s Earth observation capabilities and reaffirms its position among spacefaring nations. The new satellite, whose specific designation was not immediately released but is referred to as Pakistan’s fourth Earth Observation Satellite, is equipped with cutting-edge imaging technology designed for high-resolution, round-the-clock data acquisition. Its primary purpose is to significantly enhance Pakistan’s capacity in various critical areas, including:

  • Disaster Management and Mitigation: Providing timely warnings for natural disasters such as floods, landslides, earthquakes, and tracking glacier recession and deforestation.
  • Urban Planning and Infrastructure Development: Aiding in urban planning, monitoring infrastructure growth, mapping transportation networks, and identifying geohazard risks, particularly in connection with national development projects like the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).
  • Agricultural Monitoring and Food Security: Supporting precision agriculture to boost crop yields and enhancing agricultural land management.
  • Environmental Protection and Climate Change Analysis: Contributing to environmental monitoring, water resource management, and climate change analysis.

The launch was spearheaded by the Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO), Pakistan’s national space agency. Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar lauded the engineers and technical teams from SUPARCO and its Chinese partners for their “exemplary cooperation and unwavering commitment.” Federal Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives Ahsan Iqbal also congratulated the nation, emphasizing that this achievement reflects the dedication and excellence of SUPARCO’s team and strengthens the “iron brotherhood” between Pakistan and China.

This successful mission builds upon Pakistan’s growing space fleet, which includes the Pakistan Remote Sensing Satellite-1 (PRSS-1) launched in 2018, and the fully indigenous Electro-Optical Satellite EO-1 launched in January 2025. The new satellite aligns with Pakistan’s National Space Policy and Vision 2047, which aims to position the country at the forefront of space technology and innovation. Looking ahead, Minister Iqbal reiterated Pakistan’s ambitious goals, including sending a Pakistani astronaut into space next year with China’s assistance and successfully completing a lunar mission by 2035.
