Discussions on Security and Counter-Terrorism
During the meeting, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif thanked President Trump for his “public endorsement of Pakistan’s role in counter-terrorism” and emphasized the importance of enhancing security and intelligence cooperation between the two nations. The discussions on regional security focused on collaborative efforts to address shared challenges, reflecting a mutual interest in a secure and stable South Asia.
Prime Minister Sharif lauded President Trump’s “bold, courageous and decisive” leadership, specifically acknowledging his instrumental role in mediating the May ceasefire between India and Pakistan. This intervention, the Prime Minister noted, helped “avert a major catastrophe in South Asia.”
Economic and Diplomatic Engagement
In a move to bolster economic ties, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif invited US companies to invest in key sectors of Pakistan’s economy, including agriculture, IT, mines, minerals, and energy. The Prime Minister expressed hope that the partnership would continue to strengthen under President Trump’s leadership, following the recent tariff agreement that imposed a 19 percent tariff on Pakistani goods.
The meeting also touched on the situation in the Middle East. Prime Minister Sharif commended President Trump’s recent efforts to bring an “immediate end to the war in Gaza,” highlighting his initiative to engage with leaders from the Muslim world at the United Nations General Assembly.
A Milestone in Bilateral Relations
The meeting marks the first formal bilateral interaction between the two leaders and signals a gradual warming of relations between Washington and Islamabad. A senior US State Department official noted that the ties were “gradually warming up” in President Trump’s second term, emphasizing that the US has an independent relationship with Pakistan, separate from its partnership with India.
The visit comes as Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif concludes his participation in the 80th session of the UN General Assembly in New York. The premier is scheduled to address the General Assembly, further highlighting Pakistan’s diplomatic engagements on the global stage.
