Syed Tariq Fatemi, Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs, today addressed the UN Security Council, reiterating Pakistan’s firm support for all international efforts to end the protracted war between Russia and Ukraine. He emphasized that the conflict, which has lasted for more than three and a half years, has taken a heavy toll on innocent lives and that no dispute can be settled by the use of force.
Fatemi stated that Pakistan has consistently backed Security Council resolutions on the war and will continue to do so. He highlighted the severe global consequences of the conflict, noting that it has created a serious humanitarian crisis and is fueling food and energy shortages, thereby pushing up global inflation.
“The fighting has already created a serious humanitarian crisis,” Fatemi warned. “It is also fuelling food and energy shortages and pushing up global inflation.”
He called upon both Moscow and Kyiv to “show patience and tolerance” and to pursue a negotiated solution. Fatemi affirmed Pakistan’s readiness to “support any genuine move that can bring this conflict to an end.”
The UN Secretary-General also addressed the Security Council, stressing the importance of not losing the “fragile diplomatic momentum” between the two sides. In a separate briefing, he called for a ceasefire in Gaza, insisting that the “day after” the war ends there must be anchored in international law, with a rejection of any “ethnic cleansing” of Palestinians.
Meanwhile, in a separate development, Russian Ambassador Albert P. Khorev accused Ukraine and its European allies of deliberately undermining peace initiatives. He claimed that calls for a comprehensive ceasefire are aimed at buying time to regroup and rearm. Khorev reiterated Russia’s conditions for lasting peace, including ending what he described as Kyiv’s neo-Nazi policies, protecting Russian speakers, halting NATO expansion, and barring foreign troops from Ukraine.
The Russian ambassador thanked Pakistan for its balanced and neutral approach, noting its support for diplomatic solutions at the UN. “Pakistan’s balanced approach reflects the global majority that seeks peace and rejects the glorification of Nazism,” he said.
