Spain Threatens to Boycott 2026 FIFA World Cup if Israel Participates

Sep 20, 2025 | Latest News, Global Affairs

Madrid, Spain The Spanish government has issued a firm and unequivocal declaration, stating that the Spanish national football team will not participate in the 2026 FIFA World Cup if Israel is included in the tournament. This unprecedented announcement links Spain’s involvement in the world’s most prestigious football event directly to a geopolitical issue, signaling a new era of sports diplomacy.

The decision, communicated by the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cooperation and European Union, is rooted in the government’s official position regarding the ongoing conflict and its commitment to international law. Spain views Israel’s actions in the region as a serious violation of human rights and has called on the international community to take decisive action.

Minister for Foreign Affairs, Manuel Alba, stated in an official briefing, “Football, like all great sports, is a symbol of peace, fair play, and unity. We cannot stand on the same pitch as a nation that we believe is in flagrant violation of international law and the fundamental principles of humanity. Our government’s position is clear: our participation is contingent upon Israel’s exclusion from the tournament. This is a matter of principle, not politics.”

The Spanish government’s stance places significant pressure on FIFA, the global governing body of football, to address the issue. The organization has historically tried to remain neutral on political matters, but this move by a major footballing nation challenges that position directly. This declaration could set a precedent for other countries and sports organizations facing similar ethical and political dilemmas.

While this move may be a setback to the Spanish football team and its fans, a recent poll suggests that more than 60% of the Spanish public supports the government’s stance. The Spanish football federation has not yet issued a public statement.
