The Alagoas State Government has declared three days of official mourning following a catastrophic bus accident in the state’s rural interior on Tuesday, which has claimed the lives of at least 16 people, including four children.
Details of the Incident
The bus, transporting approximately 60 devotees, was returning from the “Our Lady of Candelaria” religious festival in Ceara state—an annual event that draws thousands of pilgrims every February. Officials report that the vehicle veered off the road while navigating a curve, subsequently overturning.
The impact of the crash ejected several passengers from the vehicle, while others remained trapped beneath the mangled wreckage. Colonel Andre Madeiro, director of the Alagoas Aviation Department, described the scene as “highly complex” and “atypical” due to the severity of the damage.

This incident highlights a persistent challenge for Brazilian infrastructure. According to the Ministry of Transportation, over 10,000 people lost their lives in traffic accidents in 2024 alone. This latest tragedy follows other high-profile incidents, including a December 2024 collision in Minas Gerais that killed 32 people and a football team bus crash earlier that same year.
An investigation into the technical cause of the Alagoas crash is currently underway.
