The European Union (EU) issued a formal statement urging the Taliban to prevent militant groups from using Afghanistan as a launchpad for regional attacks. The appeal, led by EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, follows a sharp escalation in cross-border violence that has brought Pakistan and Afghanistan to the brink of “open war.” The EU reiterated that Afghan territory must not be used to threaten neighboring states and called on the de facto authorities in Kabul to take “effective action” against all terrorist groups operating within their borders.

The diplomatic intervention comes amid a massive flare-up in hostilities, including the ongoing “Operation Ghazab-lil-Haq” launched by the Pakistan Army. According to Pakistani officials, more than 331 Afghan Taliban and allied militants have been killed in recent strikes targeting over 37 locations inside Afghanistan, including sites in Kabul and Kandahar. In retaliation, the Taliban claimed to have downed a Pakistani fighter jet near Jalalabad, a claim Islamabad has dismissed as “fake news” and launched drone attacks on Pakistani cities such as Abbottabad.

The EU warned that continued hostilities could have “serious implications” for the wider region and urged both sides to engage in immediate dialogue. While the Taliban have expressed an openness to talks, the Pakistan Prime Minister’s Office has maintained a “zero tolerance” policy, citing the Taliban’s continued failure to dismantle groups like the TTP. With Turkey and Iran also offering to mediate, the international community remains on high alert as the humanitarian situation at the border worsens.
