Faisalabad — An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Faisalabad on Sunday announced its verdict in the May 9 attack on the residence of Interior Minister Rana Sanaullah, handing down significant sentences to several senior Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders and local political figures.
According to the judgment, PTI leaders Omar Ayub Khan, Shibli Faraz, Zartaj Gul, MNA Ismail Sila, and MPA Sheikh Shahid Javed have each been sentenced to 10 years in prison for their role in the violent attack.
In addition, the court sentenced 14 other individuals to three years’ imprisonment, while 34 accused were acquitted due to insufficient evidence.
The verdict marks a major development in the accountability process surrounding the violent incidents of May 9, 2023, when violent mobs targeted sensitive installations, political offices, and residences of senior government officials following the arrest of former prime minister Imran Khan.
The prosecution argued that the attack on Rana Sanaullah’s residence in Faisalabad was deliberately orchestrated to spread chaos and undermine state authority. The court, after reviewing witness statements, video evidence, and forensic reports, ruled in favor of strong penalties for those found guilty.
Legal experts noted that the judgment underscores the state’s zero-tolerance policy for attacks on public and private property, as well as attempts to destabilize law and order under political cover.
The convicted individuals have the right to appeal the verdict in higher courts.
