At Least 22 Ethiopian Migrants Killed in “Horrific” Road Accident

On January 6, 2026, at least 22 Ethiopian migrants were killed and 65 others injured after the truck they were traveling in overturned in the northeastern Afar region. The accident occurred on Tuesday morning in Semera, the regional capital, when a lorry packed with approximately 85 passengers flipped while navigating an irregular migration route. Senior Afar official Mohammed Ali Biedo confirmed that 30 of the survivors remain in critical condition, and the regional government is currently conducting “life-saving operations” to assist those hospitalized. Authorities stated the victims had been “misled by illegal brokers” and were largely unaware of the physical dangers associated with the journey, which often involves overcrowded and unsafe vehicles.

The incident highlights the ongoing dangers of the “Eastern Route,” a perilous corridor where migrants travel from Ethiopia through Djibouti and Somalia to reach Yemen and eventually Saudi Arabia. According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), 2025 marked a “grim milestone” for this path, with over 890 recorded deaths and disappearances—the highest annual toll since documenting began. Despite the extreme risks, tens of thousands of youth continue to attempt the crossing in search of economic opportunities. In response to the tragedy, the Afar regional government cautioned citizens against the “false promises” of human traffickers and vowed to intensify law enforcement efforts to dismantle smuggling networks and prevent future fatalities on this deadly transit line.
