Astronomers have officially catalogued the 40,000th near-Earth asteroid (NEA), marking a historic milestone in planetary defense.
☄️ 40 000 near-Earth asteroids discovered!
Thankfully, none of them are cause for concern for the foreseeable future, but ESA’s planetary defence teams are keeping a watchful eye on the skies.https://t.co/CpEkNle72e pic.twitter.com/Y3RcGwpnZD

This achievement, announced by the European Space Agency (ESA) and NASA in late 2025, underscores an exponential rise in detection: approximately 10,000 of these space rocks were identified in the last three years alone.

While the 40,000 total highlights the “busy” nature of our orbital neighborhood, scientists emphasize that none of these known asteroids pose an impact threat for the foreseeable future.
The surge in discoveries is largely attributed to advanced survey technology, including the newly inaugurated Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile and ESA’s specialized Flyeye telescopes, which are designed to capture small, fast-moving objects that previously slipped through existing search networks.
