An IDF inquiry determined that the soldiers’ conduct “completely deviated from IDF orders and values.” The two soldiers involved, who have not been named, will receive 30 days of military detention and will be removed from combat duty. Additionally, six other soldiers who were present at the scene and failed to intervene or report the incident will be dealt with separately.
The incident, which involved a soldier striking the statue with a sledgehammer and another photographing the act, prompted widespread condemnation after the image circulated online.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed being “stunned and saddened” by the event.
The IDF has expressed “deep regret over the incident” and emphasized that its operations in Lebanon are directed “solely” against Hezbollah “and other terrorist groups, and not against Lebanese civilians.”
In coordination with the local community, IDF troops replaced the damaged statue.
The IDF reiterated its commitment to upholding its values and maintaining operational standards during its operations in Lebanon.
