In a major shake-up at the Pentagon, US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth has abruptly forced Army Chief of Staff General Randy George into immediate retirement amid the ongoing war with Iran.
STATEMENT:
General Randy A. George will be retiring from his position as the 41st Chief of Staff of the Army effective immediately. The Department of War is grateful for General George’s decades of service to our nation. We wish him well in his retirement.

The surprise move, first reported by The Washington Post and confirmed by CBS News and others, also includes the removal of two other senior Army generals: David Hodne (head of Transformation and Training) and William Green (chief of the Army Chaplain Corps).
This comes roughly 18 months into General George’s usual four-year term and happens as US forces are deep into the fifth week of operations against Iran. Hegseth reportedly wants Army leadership that’s more closely aligned with President Trump’s and his own vision.
The decision has raised eyebrows. Critics say firing top generals during active combat risks disrupting planning, coordination with allies, and overall readiness. Some reports suggest tensions boiled over when George and Army Secretary Daniel Driscoll refused to remove four qualified minority and female officers from a promotion list at Hegseth’s request.
Acting Army Chief will now be Gen. Christopher LaNeve, a former aide to Hegseth and ex-commander of the 82nd Airborne. His quick rise is already sparking debate about whether political loyalty is becoming more important than experience in senior appointments.
Supporters argue the change will bring fresh momentum, especially if ground operations expand. But many defence experts and lawmakers worry that frequent turnover at the top could weaken trust between civilian leaders and the military at a critical time.
Bottom line: This is one of the biggest Pentagon leadership upheavals in decades, happening right in the middle of a hot war.
