At least five police officers, including an assistant sub-inspector, were injured on Tuesday, April 7, 2026, when an improvised explosive device (IED) exploded in the Shahbazkhel town of Lakki Marwat. According to district police spokesperson Qudratullah, the attack was carried out by “Fitna-al-Khawarij,” a term used by the state for the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan. The explosive was reportedly rigged to a motorcycle parked along the Bannu-DI Khan section of the Indus Highway and detonated as a police patrol van from the Shahbazkhel station passed by. The blast, which was heard throughout the surrounding area, left the officers with varying injuries and caused significant damage to the official vehicle.

Following the attack, the injured personnel were shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital for emergency medical treatment. Security forces, including the Counter-Terrorism Department and the Bomb Disposal Squad, quickly cordoned off the site to collect evidence and launch a search operation for the perpetrators. District Police Officer Nazir Khan has since issued directives to beef up security across the region. This incident follows a worrying trend in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which saw fatalities from terror-related violence rise to 2,331 in 2025. The surge in attacks on law enforcement highlights the persistent security challenges facing the province amidst broader regional instability and shifting militant tactics along the Indus Highway.
