Netanyahu Lays Out Hardline Terms as US-Iran Nuclear Talks Resume

Feb 17, 2026 | Latest News, Global Affairs

Netanyahu issued a series of uncompromising demands for any potential nuclear agreement between the United States and Iran. Speaking at the annual Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations, Netanyahu insisted that a simple “halt” to enrichment is insufficient. He told attendees that he conveyed five “red lines” to President Donald Trump during their meeting last week: the complete removal of all enriched uranium from Iranian soil, the total dismantling of enrichment infrastructure, a strict 300-kilometer limit on ballistic missiles, an end to regional proxy funding, and “effective, no-lead-time” inspections.

Netanyahu’s intervention comes just one day before the second round of indirect negotiations between Washington and Tehran begins in Geneva. Representing the U.S. are Special Adviser Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, while Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi is leading the Iranian delegation under Omani mediation. While President Trump has expressed a “let’s give it a shot” attitude toward diplomacy, Netanyahu remains publicly “very skeptical,” citing Iran’s history of deception.

To back the diplomatic push with military weight, President Trump has deployed the USS Gerald R. Ford strike group to join the USS Abraham Lincoln in the Middle East. Simultaneously, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard (IRGC) launched “Smart Control” naval drills in the Strait of Hormuz today, testing live-fire capabilities in a clear signal of deterrence. The Geneva talks are being watched globally as the last major effort to avert a “very traumatic” military escalation.
