A powerful 5.5-magnitude earthquake struck Bangladesh on Friday, causing widespread panic in the capital, Dhaka, and resulting in at least five confirmed deaths and approximately 100 injuries. The quake, which lasted for 26 seconds and had its epicenter in the Narsingdi district, located just 33km (16 miles) from Dhaka, prompted residents to evacuate buildings as the ground shook violently.

The tremor caused buildings in Dhaka to sustain damage, with local media reporting that deaths in the capital included people struck by falling railings and others killed by collapsing roofs and walls. The shaking was strong enough to be felt over 325km away in the neighboring Indian city of Kolkata, though no casualties were reported there.

While Bangladesh is situated near several tectonic plate boundaries, major earthquakes are relatively infrequent. However, an Al Jazeera correspondent described this as “one of the biggest earthquakes in recent history” to occur so close to the densely populated capital. The full extent of the damage across Narsingdi, a district famous for its textile industry, is still being assessed.
