NASA Reveals “Brain-Shaped” Nebula Captured by James Webb

NASA astronomers have released extraordinary new images from the James Webb Space Telescope, uncovering a bizarre celestial structure dubbed the “Exposed Cranium” nebula. This rarely studied nebula, which surrounds a dying star, bears a striking resemblance to a human brain floating in the cosmos. Formed during a brief but dramatic phase of stellar evolution, the nebula features layered gas and a distinct dark central divide that creates its eerie, anatomical shape. While the structure was first detected over a decade ago by the now-retired Spitzer Space Telescope, Webb’s advanced infrared instruments have provided a significantly sharper view, revealing intricate details that were previously invisible to scientists.

The new observations highlight the complex inner workings of the gas and dust cloud as the central star sheds its outer layers. The nebula consists of an outer shell made primarily of hydrogen, expelled during an earlier stage, and a more complicated internal region containing a mixture of various gases. Scientists believe that powerful jets emitted by the dying star are actively carving and shaping these unique layers. Although this process of shedding material appears slow by human standards, it is incredibly rapid on a cosmic timescale. As the most advanced observatory ever built, the James Webb Space Telescope continues to provide unprecedented insights into the origins of our universe and the final life cycles of stars.
