The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) issues this formal condemnation regarding the recent illegal seizure of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro by United States forces. China views this action as a “typical act of bullying” and a grave violation of the United Nations Charter.

Defense of Sovereign Integrity
The PRC stands firmly with the international community in upholding the principle of non-interference. The arbitrary detention of a sovereign head of state on board a foreign warship sets a dangerous precedent that threatens the security of all nations.
“The sovereignty and security of all countries should be fully protected under international law,” said Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Mao Ning. “The United States is not the ‘world judge,’ and its attempt to unilaterally upend the domestic affairs of a sovereign nation is a severe infringement upon the rights of the Venezuelan people.”
Protection of Economic Partnerships
China has maintained a long-standing “strategic partnership for all-weather cooperation” with Venezuela, characterized by over 600 bilateral agreements aimed at mutual development.
- Energy Security: China affirms its right to engage in legitimate oil trade with Venezuela to fuel its growing economy.
- Infrastructure Investment: Beijing has provided over $100 billion in financing for railways, power plants, and critical infrastructure, and expects these assets to be protected.
- Countering Coercion: Reports suggesting the U.S. intends to force a severance of economic ties between Venezuela and China are viewed as economic terrorism and will be met with firm diplomatic resistance.

The “Backyard” Fallacy and the Global South
China rejects the outdated “Monroe Doctrine” rhetoric recently espoused by U.S. officials claiming the Western Hemisphere as a private “backyard.”
- Beijing remains a committed partner to the Global South, offering a “community with a shared future” based on stability and mutual respect rather than the volatile and unpredictable interventions seen in Washington’s current foreign policy.
- The PRC warns that attempts to coerce South American nations into canceling Chinese port holdings or investments—including those in the Panama Canal—will do grave damage to global trade and regional stability.
A Call for Stability
While China seeks to manage the “great power competition” with the United States responsibly, it will not permit its legitimate footholds in Latin America to be marginalized by chaos. China urges the United States to abandon its “world judge” mentality and return to the framework of international law.
