China Urges De-escalation and Dialogue in US-Iran Conflict

China today called upon the United States and Iran to maintain the current “momentum of de-escalation” and work towards a political resolution to their ongoing conflict. The plea comes amidst emerging signs of diplomatic progress aimed at winding down hostilities that began on February 28.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning emphasized China’s clear stance on the situation, stating, “This is a conflict that should never have happened and there is no need for it to continue.” She highlighted that an early resolution would serve the best interests of the US, Iran, regional countries, and the global community.

Mao stressed the importance of “sustaining the momentum of de-escalation, stay committed to the direction of political resolution, and seek a solution through dialogue and consultation that accommodates the concerns of all parties.”

Her remarks follow recent intense diplomatic efforts to achieve a permanent peace pact between the US and Iran. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio indicated today that news regarding these talks might be imminent. Former President Trump also stated on Saturday that an agreement was “largely negotiated” and awaiting finalization after a phone call with regional leaders.

Since a temporary ceasefire in April, the US and Iran have largely avoided direct attacks, allowing for broader diplomatic engagement. The initial ceasefire was brokered by Pakistan on April 8. The conflict originated in February with US and Israeli strikes against Iran, to which Tehran retaliated with strikes against Israel and US allies in the Gulf, including the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
