FM Rangel Hails Gaza Ceasefire and Affirms Diplomatic Momentum

Oct 17, 2025 | Global Affairs, Latest News

Portuguese Foreign Minister Paulo Rangel has concluded a successful visit to Riyadh, where he met with his counterpart Prince Faisal bin Farhan to enhance bilateral relations and discuss regional peace.

Minister Rangel praised the ceasefire brokered between Israel and Hamas by the Trump administration, describing the prisoner and hostage exchange as a “historic turning point” and a breakthrough that brings “huge progress on the ground.” He stressed that sustained international support is vital for the truce, which remains “fragile and delicate.”

On Portuguese foreign policy, Rangel affirmed that the recent recognition of the State of Palestine on September 21 was the culmination of Portugal’s long-standing policy in favour of the two-state solution. He stated the move was necessitated by the urgency of the Gaza conflict to defend the very idea of a future Palestinian state, noting the diplomatic momentum created by the UN conference co-chaired by Saudi Arabia and France.

During his bilateral meetings, the Minister emphasized the huge potential to boost economic and cultural relations between Portugal and Saudi Arabia, identifying renewable energy, technology, and triangular cooperation in Africa as key priority sectors. Portugal views itself as a stable, investment-friendly gateway to Europe.
