Iran Signals Compromise as Geneva Nuclear Talks Loom

Feb 16, 2026 | Latest News, Global Affairs

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi announced that Tehran is ready to discuss “compromises” regarding its nuclear program, provided the United States is willing to negotiate the lifting of economic sanctions. In an interview with the BBC, Takht-Ravanchi signaled that Iran could dilute its stockpile of 60%-enriched uranium, a level just shy of weapons-grade, as a gesture of good faith. However, he emphasized that the ball is now “in America’s court” to prove its sincerity.

This diplomatic opening comes as indirect talks are set to resume in Geneva on Tuesday, February 17. The negotiations, mediated by Oman, follow a first round in Muscat that both sides described as “positive.” Despite the cautious optimism, significant hurdles remain. President Donald Trump has maintained a “maximalist” stance, with U.S. officials publicly calling for “zero enrichment,” a demand Takht-Ravanchi flatly rejected as “off the table.” Furthermore, Iran continues to refuse any discussion on its ballistic missile program, citing it as a non-negotiable defensive capability.

The stakes are historically high. While Trump pursues a deal, he has simultaneously ordered the USS Gerald R. Ford to join the USS Abraham Lincoln in the Middle East, amassing what he calls a “big armada.” With over 40,000 U.S. troops in the region and Iran warning that any strike would lead to an “existential” regional conflict, the Geneva talks are seen as the final diplomatic off-ramp to avoid a traumatic war.
