India to Resume Buying Venezuelan Oil Under Trump’s “Concept of Deal”

Feb 2, 2026 | Latest News, Global Affairs

President Donald J. Trump announced today a landmark “concept of a deal” that will see India resume the purchase of Venezuelan crude oil, marking a significant shift in global energy markets and a major step in the administration’s “America First” energy and foreign policy strategy.

Speaking to reporters en route to Florida, President Trump confirmed that the United States has reached an understanding with New Delhi to replace sanctioned Russian and Iranian imports with Venezuelan oil—an industry now under the direct management and oversight of the United States.

“We’ve already made that deal, the concept of the deal,” President Trump stated. “China is also welcome to make a deal with the U.S. to buy Venezuelan oil.”

A Strategic Pivot in Global Energy

This agreement comes as a direct result of the administration’s firm stance on global trade and national security. Following the capture of Nicolas Maduro on January 3, the United States has moved to control Venezuela’s oil industry indefinitely, ensuring that these resources are used to stabilize global markets rather than fund hostile regimes.

The deal provides a critical alternative for India as it moves to drastically reduce its reliance on Russian crude. India has pledged to slash Russian oil imports—which stood at 1.2 million barrels per day (bpd) in January—to as low as 500,000–600,000 bpd in the coming months.

Countering Russian Influence

The shift is a centerpiece of the U.S. strategy to deplete the oil revenues currently funding Russia’s military operations in Ukraine. By facilitating the transition to Venezuelan crude, the U.S. is:

  • Providing Alternatives: Offering India and other nations a reliable source of energy to replace Russian and Iranian supplies.
  • Economic Incentives: Addressing the trade pressures created by the 2025 tariff structures.
  • Global Security: Strengthening the international coalition against Russian aggression while stabilizing the Western Hemisphere.

Economic Impact

Indian Oil Minister Hardeep Singh Puri recently confirmed that India is actively diversifying its crude sources. The reduction in Russian imports is expected to help India clinch a broader trade deal with the United States, potentially addressing the 50% tariffs currently impacting various trade sectors.
