Oman’s Foreign Minister Critiques U.S. Involvement in Iran Conflict

In a striking op-ed published in The Economist, Omani Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi argued that the United States has effectively lost control of its own foreign policy. Albusaidi, who served as a key mediator in recent indirect nuclear talks between Washington and Tehran, suggested that U.S. allies must now step in to help extricate the superpower from an “unwanted entanglement” in the Middle East. He emphasized that the current war does not serve American interests and claimed that twice in the past nine months, a viable peace deal was nearly reached before being derailed by military action.

Albusaidi described the February 28 strikes by the U.S. and Israel as a “greatest miscalculation” that occurred just hours after substantive peace talks had concluded. He characterized these strikes as an unlawful move against a briefly possible peace. Furthermore, the Foreign Minister noted that Iran’s subsequent retaliatory attacks against American targets in neighboring countries were an “inevitable, if deeply regrettable” consequence of the initial strikes. Oman has long positioned itself as a neutral diplomatic bridge in the region, and these comments reflect growing frustration among Gulf mediators regarding the intensity of Operation Epic Fury and the collapse of recent diplomatic efforts to de-escalate the situation.
