The federal government announced a landmark agreement allowing overseas Pakistanis to obtain one-year Spanish resident cards. The decision was finalized during a high-level meeting in Islamabad chaired by Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Minister for Overseas Pakistanis Chaudhry Salik Hussain. This initiative provides a structured legal pathway for thousands of Pakistanis currently in Spain, transitioning them from temporary status to formal residency.

The program offers a long-term roadmap to European integration. After the initial one-year card, residents who maintain their status for seven to eight years will become eligible for permanent residency and eventual Spanish citizenship. To ensure security and efficiency, Minister Naqvi mandated a simplified verification process. Notably, applicants will no longer need multiple documents; instead, a single National Character Certificate issued by the National Police Bureau will suffice.
