The Pakistan Navy today solemnly observed Navy Day across all its bases, paying heartfelt tribute to the heroic sacrifices of naval personnel who valiantly defended the nation during the 1965 war. The central ceremony, held at Naval Headquarters in Islamabad, was presided over by Chief of the Naval Staff, Admiral Naveed Ashraf, who honored the courage of the naval heroes and underscored the Navy’s crucial role in safeguarding the country’s maritime frontiers and advancing its burgeoning Blue Economy.
“Nations that commemorate their historic milestones remain ever poised and resolute in safeguarding sovereignty and integrity,” Admiral Ashraf stated, reflecting on the valor and determination that define the Pakistan Navy’s history.
Honoring the Heroes of 1965, and Operation Dwarka
Navy Day, celebrated annually on September 8, serves as a poignant reminder of the gallantry displayed by Pakistani naval warriors during the 1965 conflict. The day commemorates the daring and decisive Operation Dwarka, a raid on India’s coastal town of Dwarka. On this day, a flotilla of seven Pakistani warships launched a successful strike on critical shore installations, including a key radar station that was vital to India’s naval visibility. This bold operation dealt a significant blow to the adversary’s naval capabilities and marked a moment of operational superiority for the Pakistan Navy.
Another decisive factor in the war was the formidable Submarine Ghazi, which emerged as a key strategic asset. Its mere presence in the Arabian Sea created a powerful psychological and operational deterrence, forcing the Indian Navy to reconsider its maneuvers and significantly raising the stakes for any hostile intentions against Pakistan’s maritime territories.
“This historic day exalts the valor of our gallant heroes, who embody inspiration and kindle patriotism among all Pakistanis,” Admiral Ashraf remarked, acknowledging the profound impact of their bravery on the national spirit.
Pakistan Navy’s Modern Role and Commitment to the Blue Economy
Inspired by its past, the Pakistan Navy continues to demonstrate its resilience and combat readiness. Admiral Ashraf highlighted the Navy’s ongoing operations, which are critical to securing the country’s vital maritime interests and ensuring uninterrupted sea trade. He stressed that the Navy’s mission has a “singularity of purpose” in defending the nation’s integrity against all threats.
Looking to the future, the Naval Chief also linked the commemoration of Navy Day to the strategic vision of Pakistan’s Blue Economy. He affirmed that the Navy is committed to advancing the maritime sector and fostering sustainable growth for the nation. As a part of this vision, he announced the upcoming second Pakistan International Maritime Exhibition and Conference (PIMEC-25), to be held from November 3-6, 2025, at the Karachi Expo Centre. The event is set to connect global stakeholders and promote investment, which is anticipated to transform the region’s maritime landscape and deliver significant economic dividends to the country.
A Call to Honor and Renewed Commitment
In his address, Admiral Ashraf urged the entire nation to pay homage to the martyrs and veterans who secured Pakistan’s freedom and dignity. He called upon all citizens to renew their commitment to defending the homeland with pride, honoring the sacrifices of those who laid down their lives in the line of duty.
“May Allah grant us the strength to uphold this sacred trust and protect our beloved homeland with honor and pride,” he concluded.
