Russia’s First AI Humanoid Robot, ‘Green,’ Makes Debut with Putin

Russia’s first AI-powered humanoid robot, named ‘Green,’ made its public debut by greeting President Vladimir Putin at the AI Journey International Conference in Moscow, held from November 19 to 21. Developed by Sberbank, Russia’s largest bank, the anthropomorphic robot is powered by the national GigaChat large language model and Yandex’s Alice AI generative model.

Introducing itself to the President, Green stated, “I am the first Russian humanoid robot with embodied artificial intelligence… the physical embodiment of technologies.” It further highlighted that its motors and numerous sensors enable it to move smoothly, maintain balance, and interact safely with people, demonstrating its capabilities by performing a short dance for Putin before moving to its designated booth.

The presentation followed closely after another Russian robot reportedly stumbled during its debut. Speaking at the conference, Putin stressed the critical importance of building domestic AI technology, urging Russian companies to focus on creating national language models. He framed the development of proprietary generative AI as a matter of “state, technological, and, one could say, value sovereignty,” asserting that Russia “cannot allow critical dependence on foreign systems.”
