Bangladesh has renewed its demand that India extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who was recently sentenced to death in absentia for last year’s violent crackdown on a student-led uprising. Touhid Hossain, the foreign affairs chief in Bangladesh’s interim government, confirmed that Dhaka sent a formal letter urging New Delhi to hand Hasina over, saying India has an “obligatory responsibility” under their 2013 extradition treaty.
Hasina, now 78, has been hiding in India since her government was toppled in August 2024. The United Nations says more than 1,400 people were killed during the uprising that ended her 15-year rule. This week, a special International Crimes Tribunal found her guilty of crimes against humanity, a major promise of the interim administration led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus.

Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry warned that granting Hasina refuge is “unfriendly” and a “travesty of justice,” especially after her conviction. India has acknowledged the verdict but has not commented on whether it will send her back. Reports indicate this is at least the third extradition request Dhaka has made.
