Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar participated in a crucial multilateral meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump and leaders from key Muslim nations to discuss an immediate resolution to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The meeting, held on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) session, brought together high-level representatives from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UAE, Egypt, Jordan, Turkiye, and Indonesia.
The gathering underscores a renewed diplomatic push to de-escalate the crisis and secure a path toward peace. In a televised address ahead of the formal consultations, President Trump emphasized the importance of the group, stating, “This is the group that can do it, more than any other group in the world.” He called for the immediate release of all hostages and an end to the war, a sentiment echoed by Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, who thanked the president for hosting the meeting and expressed hope for its success.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif welcomed President Trump’s commitment to peace, calling him “a man of peace.” He recalled the president’s previous role in de-escalating tensions between Pakistan and India, thanking him for his efforts. The Prime Minister’s remarks reinforced Pakistan’s stance on the need for a swift and peaceful resolution to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
While the meeting’s primary focus was the Gaza conflict, it also provided an opportunity to build on the recent positive momentum in Pakistan-U.S. relations, which has seen a notable shift since President Trump took office in January. This follows a significant one-on-one meeting in June between President Trump and Chief of Army Staff, General Asim Munir, at the White House.
According to the White House, President Trump’s plan for peace in Gaza includes a phased Israeli withdrawal, the deployment of a regional peacekeeping force, and an internationally supported reconstruction process. The proposal, which envisions a role for the Palestinian Authority while sidelining Hamas, requires the support and cooperation of Arab and Muslim nations.
The Prime Minister’s participation in this high-level dialogue reaffirms Pakistan’s dedication to regional and global peace, and its commitment to a just and lasting resolution for the people of Palestine.
