Ceasefire with Iran Remains Intact Despite Recent Clash

May 8, 2026 | Latest News

U.S. President Donald Trump has affirmed that a ceasefire with Iran remains in effect despite a recent clash between Iranian and U.S. naval forces in the Strait of Hormuz. Both sides have blamed each other for initiating the conflict.

According to the U.S., Iranian forces launched missiles, drones, and small boats against three U.S. warships in what they have described as an “unprovoked attack.” President Trump stated that Iran had “trifled with us today.”

Conversely, Iran’s top military command alleges that the U.S. targeted an Iranian oil tanker and another vessel approaching the Strait of Hormuz, and conducted “aerial attacks” on several coastal areas.

The United Arab Emirates’ Ministry of Defence reported that its air defenses were “actively engaging” with a missile and drone attack originating from Iran early on Friday. Iranian state media initially reported “explosions” in the Strait of Hormuz, describing an “exchange of fire” with the “enemy.” Local media also reported explosions heard in Tehran.

Iran’s military command stated that U.S. “aerial attacks” struck the coasts of Bandar Khamir, Sirik, and Qeshm Island, prompting an immediate response by attacking U.S. military vessels and inflicting “significant damage.” They accused the U.S. of violating the ceasefire.

U.S. Central Command (Centcom) characterized the Iranian attacks as “unprovoked,” stating that Iranian forces launched “multiple missiles, drones and small boats” at U.S. Navy guided-missile destroyers transiting the strait. Centcom reported that it “eliminated inbound threats and targeted Iranian military facilities responsible for attacking US forces, including missile and drone launch sites; command and control locations; and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance nodes.” Centcom reiterated that it “does not seek escalation but remains positioned and ready to protect American forces.”

President Trump, in a post on Truth Social, stated that the U.S. had destroyed multiple small boats, missiles, and drones, inflicting “great damage” on the “Iranian attackers.” He also warned that if Iran does not sign a deal “FAST!” the U.S. would respond “a lot harder, and a lot more violently, in the future.”

An Israeli source has stated that there was “no Israeli involvement” in the recent attacks.

These tensions have risen despite recent reports suggesting that the U.S. and Iran might be nearing a 14-point memorandum of understanding to establish a framework for more detailed nuclear negotiations. An Iranian foreign ministry spokesman confirmed that the latest U.S. proposal is under consideration, with input from Pakistani mediators.

However, a senior member of Iran’s parliament has dismissed the memorandum of understanding as a “wish list.” Ebrahim Rezaei, spokesperson of the Iranian parliament’s national security and foreign policy commission, warned that Iran is prepared to deliver a “harsh and regret-inducing response” if the U.S. does not meet its conditions.

Both the U.S. and Iran have threatened escalation if their respective conditions for a peace deal are not met.

President Trump has previously stated that Operation Epic Fury would conclude “assuming Iran agrees to give what has been agreed to.”

President Trump has also claimed that Iran has agreed to never have a nuclear weapon, a claim that has not been confirmed by Tehran.
