Chief Minister of Punjab announced that the Basant Festival will be celebrated in Lahore from March 12 to March 14, 2027. Basant was celebrated earlier this year in Lahore after the conditional suspension of the multi-year ban on kite flying. However, the spring festival will be celebrated strictly under the regulatory frameworks.

Punjab’s Chief Minister has invited all citizens and youth across Pakistan, overseas Pakistanis, and even international visitors to celebrate this cultural festival.
Basant festival has been historically linked with Punjab; it dates back to pre-partition times. Celebrating it in the heart of Punjab, after years of ban, makes it even more special. The zeal shown by people during Basant 2026 voiced strong support for reviving this festival and similar cultural activities.
To address safety concerns, kite flying is permitted only under the Punjab Regulation of Kite Flying legislation. The regulatory framework imposes strict measures:
- Prohibited Materials: Complete ban on metallic wire, nylon line, and glass or chemically coated strings, i.e., called manjha locally.
- Penalties: Non-bailable offenses carrying 3 to 5 years’ imprisonment, fines up to Rs 2 million, or both for unauthorized manufacturing, sale, or flying.
- Safety Protocols: Continued zero-tolerance enforcement against hazardous activities, roof access violations, usage of illegal string and its production.
The Government of Punjab aims to balance cultural heritage with contemporary safety protocols. Prioritizing the safety of domestic and foreign attendees.
