Satellite imagery confirmed that China has begun the fitting-out phase for its first Type 095 (Sui-class) nuclear-powered attack submarine (SSN) at the Huludao shipyard. Captured on February 9, the images reveal a “clean-sheet” design that marks a generational leap for the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN), moving closer to the technical benchmarks of the U.S. Virginia-class and Russia’s Yasen-class.

The Type 095 is distinguished by a prominent X-tail rudder, a first for Chinese nuclear submarines, which offers superior maneuverability and efficiency. Measuring approximately 110–115 meters in length with a wider 12-meter beam, the vessel is estimated to displace between 9,000 and 10,000 tons submerged. Most notably, the high waterline and hull geometry suggest a shift to a single-hull design, optimized for internal volume and advanced acoustic rafting to drastically reduce noise levels.

The inclusion of a pumpjet propulsor and potential turboelectric propulsion indicates that the Type 095 will be significantly harder to track than its predecessors. This “stealth hunter” is expected to serve as a primary escort for Chinese aircraft carrier task forces, providing a formidable underwater shield and long-range strike capability.
