Dhaka Gripped by Wave of Crude Bomb, and Arson Attacks

A series of arson and crude bomb incidents rocked Bangladesh’s capital yesterday, targeting public transport, institutions tied to Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus, the National Citizen Party (NCP), and religious sites—sparking widespread public anxiety and prompting a nationwide security crackdown.

No fatalities were reported, but the attacks—11 crude bomb hurlings and three bus fires—unfolded from 3:45 AM to 11:10 PM, with perpetrators fleeing on motorcycles. Key strikes included:

  • 3:45 AM: Bomb at Grameen Bank HQ (linked to Yunus) in Mirpur.
  • 7:45 AM: Explosives at Fisheries Adviser Farida Akhter’s Prabartana in Mohammadpur.
  • 7:30 AM: Four bombs at Ibn Sina Hospital and Midas Centre in Dhanmondi.
  • Evening blasts: Near Mouchak, Bangladesh Betar, Khilgaon Flyover, Shah Ali Market, and Shajahanpur flyover.
  • 11:10 PM: Bomb at NCP office in Bangla Motor; one unexploded device recovered, five suspects detained by party activists and handed to police.

Two buses burned in Shahjadpur and Merul Badda early morning; a third torched near Lab Aid Hospital in Dhanmondi at 7:30 PM. Friday’s assaults hit St. Mary’s Cathedral and St. Joseph School residences.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) launched a citywide manhunt, arresting 34 Awami League (AL) leaders/activists for planning flash processions and a 28-year-old Chhatra League member linked to the bombs. The Chief Adviser’s Press Wing warned: “Any attempt to disrupt religious coexistence will be met with the full force of the law.”

Coinciding with AL’s banned online “Dhaka Lockdown” call for November 13—when the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) sets a verdict date against ousted PM Sheikh Hasina—authorities banned public gatherings near key sites. Detective Branch chief Shafiqul Islam confirmed probing AL involvement: “They declared willingness to go to any extent for their leaders.”

Nationwide measures:

  • Railways: Night patrols, CCTV inspections, ID checks at Pakshi and Lalmonirhat.
  • Metro Rail: All staff leave cancelled amid unrest warnings.
  • Religious sites: Heightened security at churches, temples, mosques.
  • Dhaka drills: Citywide emergency response test from 4–5 PM Friday.

Police spokesperson AHM Sahadat Hossain affirmed: “We are prepared to prevent and respond to pre-election violence.” A senior Home Ministry official stressed: “Our priority is public safety, national unity, and protecting the democratic transition.”
