A lone bottlenose dolphin, affectionately named Mimmo, has become a viral sensation in the Venetian Lagoon, dazzling tourists and locals as it swims between gondolas and waterbuses. The playful creature has been spotted in the area since July, drawing crowds eager to capture videos and even prompting unplanned dolphin-spotting boat trips.

However, marine experts are raising alarms about Mimmo’s safety and wellbeing. Bottlenose dolphins usually live in pods, and Mimmo’s solitary behavior has sparked questions about whether it became separated or disoriented. The heavy boat traffic in Venice also poses serious risks, with propellers and overcrowding endangering the animal.
Authorities have urged tourists and boat operators to keep a safe distance and avoid chasing the dolphin. So far, Mimmo appears to be eating normally and swimming between the lagoon and the open sea, but experts continue to monitor its condition closely to ensure the city’s newest attraction stays safe.
