New Delhi, India – August 6, 2025 – A legal and political standoff has intensified between Elon Musk’s social media platform, X, and the Indian government over the country’s expanding internet censorship and content moderation policies. The conflict, which has been escalating since 2023, is now being litigated in the Karnataka High Court, where X has filed a lawsuit challenging the government’s new directives.
At the heart of the dispute is X’s claim that the Modi administration has overstepped its constitutional authority by empowering numerous government bodies and officials to issue content-removal orders. The platform has specifically challenged the legality of a government website, known as “Sahyog,” which it has described in court filings as an “unlawful censorship portal” that bypasses established legal safeguards.
According to a review of court documents, takedown orders issued by Indian authorities have targeted a wide range of content, including satirical cartoons of politicians, criticism of the government’s response to natural disasters, and news reports on public incidents. X argues that these actions represent an abuse of authority aimed at suppressing free speech.
In its legal defense, the Indian government asserts that its intensified oversight is necessary to combat misinformation, protect national security, and maintain public order. Government officials have stated that their measures are widely supported within the tech community, though other major platforms like Meta and Google have declined to comment on the matter.
The legal battle presents a significant challenge for Musk, a self-proclaimed “free speech absolutist,” as he navigates the complex regulatory environment of India, one of X’s largest user bases, while simultaneously seeking to expand other business ventures like Tesla and Starlink in the country.
