Afghanistan looked down and out when they needed 13 runs in the final over with just one wicket left. But two no-balls from Kagiso Rabada and a late twist helped them tie the match and force a Super Over. Just when South Africa seemed beaten again, Tristan Stubbs smashed a last-ball six in the first Super Over to push the game into a second decider.
Gurbaz Shines Despite Heartbreak
Rahmanullah Gurbaz was the star of the night, even though he ended on the losing side. He blasted 84 off 42 balls in regular play, hitting fearless sixes against South Africa’s top bowlers.
In the second Super Over, with Afghanistan needing 24 to stay alive in the tournament, Gurbaz almost pulled off a miracle. He struck three massive sixes in a row and brought the equation down to a final-ball chance. But his last shot went straight to the fielder, ending Afghanistan’s hopes heartbreakingly. Despite his heroics, Afghanistan now face an uphill battle to progress from the group stage.
Proteas Hold Their Nerve Under Pressure
Earlier, half-centuries from Ryan Rickelton (61) and Quinton de Kock (59) powered South Africa to 187. Rashid Khan sparked Afghanistan’s fightback with key wickets, while Lungi Ngidi’s clever slower balls kept South Africa in the contest.
The match had everything big hits, sharp catches, no-balls, run-outs, and nerve-shredding drama. In the end, South Africa held their composure in the second Super Over to survive what many are calling one of the greatest T20 World Cup matches ever played.
