EU Investigates Grok AI Over Sexual Deepfakes of Minors and “Spicy Mode” Lapses

Jan 6, 2026 | Latest News

The European Commission has launched a high-priority investigation into Elon Musk’s AI chatbot, Grok, following reports that the tool’s “spicy mode” and a new “edit image” feature are being used to generate sexually explicit deepfakes of minors. EU digital affairs spokesman Thomas Regnier condemned the output as “appalling” and “illegal,” asserting that such content has no place in Europe. This probe coincides with an expanded criminal investigation by the Paris public prosecutor’s office, which is now examining accusations of child pornography dissemination on the X platform.

This legal pressure follows a surge of “nudification” abuse that went viral over the 2025 holiday period, allegedly allowing users to digitally strip clothing from images of women and children.

The investigation marks a significant escalation under the Digital Services Act (DSA), which mandates that major platforms proactively mitigate systemic risks like child safety. X is already facing the fallout of a €120 million fine issued in late 2024 for advertising transparency violations. While xAI has admitted to “lapses in safeguards” and claims to be urgently fixing the flaws, regulators remain skeptical of the platform’s commitment to safety. With the UK and India also demanding accountability or planning bans on similar tools, Musk’s AI venture faces unprecedented global regulatory pushback that could result in further massive fines or restricted access within European markets.
