At least 23 people were killed and 11 others injured after a massive fire broke out at a branch of Waldo’s, Mexico’s largest discount store chain, in the northwestern city of Hermosillo on Saturday.
Local authorities said the blaze, described by witnesses as an explosion, engulfed the store and nearby parked cars, sending thick black smoke over the area. Among the injured is a 15-year-old girl, officials confirmed.

Sonora Governor Alfonso Durazo expressed condolences to the victims’ families and announced a “transparent and thorough” investigation into the cause, while ruling out deliberate violence or an attack.
Sonora’s Attorney General Gustavo Salas Chávez stated that most deaths were caused by exposure to toxic fumes. Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum also offered her condolences on social media.
The tragedy struck during Mexico’s Day of the Dead weekend, prompting authorities to cancel planned cultural events across Sonora.
