National Response and Mourning
Swiss President Guy Parmelin, who assumed office on January 1, has declared the event a “calamity of unprecedented, terrifying proportions.” In a gesture of national solidarity, Swiss flags will be flown at half-mast for five days across the country.
“Our thoughts are with the families facing an agonizing wait for news of their loved ones,” President Parmelin stated during an address to the nation.
International Casualties and Medical Cooperation
Given the international profile of the Crans-Montana resort, the tragedy has affected multiple nations. Local police commander Frederic Gisler confirmed that authorities are in constant contact with foreign embassies. Early reports indicate:
- Italy: Approximately 15 citizens injured and an equal number still missing.
- France: Nine citizens confirmed injured and eight unaccounted for.
- Cross-Border Aid: Due to the scale of the injuries, patients have been transported to hospitals across Switzerland, France, and Italy. French President Emmanuel Macron confirmed that French medical facilities are currently treating several victims.
The Investigation
Canton Chief Prosecutor Beatrice Pilloud has deployed significant resources to the site. While authorities have officially ruled out a targeted attack, the investigation is focusing on two primary areas:
- Safety Compliance: Whether the venue met fire safety standards and provided adequate emergency exits for its 300-person capacity.
- Ignition Source: Multiple witness accounts suggest that pyrotechnic “sparklers” mounted on champagne bottles may have ignited the ceiling during a staff performance.
Police Commander Gisler warned that the identification process for those who perished could take “days or even weeks” due to the intensity of the blaze.
